Regulatory Boards and Committees

Elected councillors have important roles in terms of discharging the many regulatory or 'quasi-judicial' responsibilities of the council.  Examples are: planning and building control applications; licensing of hackney carriages/private hire and public entertainments/amusement venues; enforcement of codes of conduct for members and officers.

These regulatory responsibilities are discharged by the regulatory boards and committees, namely: Planning Board; General Licensing Board; Statutory Licensing Board; Standards Committee; Audit Committee.  These bodies are made up of elected councillors, although the Audit Committee has three independent people, who are not councillors, amongst its membership of eight in total.
